Sleep apnea is a terrible disorder. Sufferers can wake up thirty times a night, and not get real rest for years. Researchers estimate that 90 percent of sleep apnea sufferers are undiagnosed. There’s burgeoning research, moreover, that sleep apnea leads to other disorders, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

At present, there are few life-altering treatments for sleep apnea. That’s where Dr. Avi Weisfogel steps in. He’s founded Dental Sleep Masters, a company that seeks a cure for the condition through a dental perspective.

Weisfogel’s company has launched a new model for primary-care and secondary-care doctors, in which they can work together to find treatments for sleep apnea sufferers. The company sees dentists as an undervalued resources that can provide sleep apnea relief. Dentists can apply devices to patients mouths and noses that stimulate their airway passages to open, which would lead to less overnight wake ups.

While patients haven’t head much luck with devices developed in the past, a few recently developed devices shows promise. These devises are user-friendly as they are small and implantable. They also don’t make much noise and don’t require the users to wear uncomfortable masks. Among these devices is the THN sleep therapy device, developed by ImThera Medical. The FDA recently approved the device for clinical trials.

Under Weisfogel’s vision, doctors and dentists work together to treat patients more effectively. What’s more, by attracting people who haven’t sought treatment, doctors and dentists can grow their practices.

Dr Weisfogel has a deep understanding of sleep disorders and dentistry. He opened Old Bridge Dental Care in 1999 and managed the office for 15 years. His office became very popular and lead to him winning awards, such as Best Dentist, multiple times. While operating Old Bridge Dental Care, he also researched sleeping disorders and how doctors and dentists could work together to solve sleep problems.

He founded Dental Sleep Masters in 2014 to help dentists become more involved with sleep disorders and promote oral devices which can greatly help patients. Avi graduated from Rutgers with a bachelors degree in biology and psychology, and received his dental degree from New York University’s College of Dentistry.
