Making a difference from Illinois to Vietnam: Dr. Mark Holterman

There are many ways you may have heard of Dr. Mark Holterman. He teaches at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria, serves as a pediatric surgeon in several Illinois hospitals, and has medical offices in Peoria and Maywood. Somehow, while shouldering this enormous workload, Dr. Mark Holterman has also found the time and goodwill to organize and donate to the International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam (IPSAC-VN). IPSAC-VN (https://www.ipsacvietnam.org/) is dedicated to improving the delivery and quality of medical services in Vietnam through a variety of means, including establishing high-quality medical facilities in rural Vietnam and distributing donated medical equipment.

Mirroring Dr. Mark Holterman’s career, IPSAC-VN makes its biggest impact through teaching. By training surgeons and surgical students in the latest and most effective techniques, Dr. Mark Holterman’s extensive experience in healthcare in Illinois is being transplanted to Vietnam, to provide quality care for those in the most need.

Dr. Mark Holterman is also a researcher, and is using and sharing his skills in the lab to improve the lives of people across the globe. IPSAC-VN runs an exchange program that brings Vietnamese researchers to the United States for two-month periods, to interact with and learn from their American counterparts.

Dr. Mark Holterman is able to provide this array of fantastic services due to his life experience and education. Though a Chicagoan, after graduating from high school Mark attended Yale, where he was a National Merit Scholar. He earned his M.D. and completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia, completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at University of Washington in Seattle, then moved to Montreal to work as a clinical research associate in immunology (https://health.usnews.com/doctors/mark-holterman-3618).

This extensive array of experience is what has allowed Dr. Mark Holterman to improve the health of so many people in so many places. Now, by donating his time and experience and facilitating the training of new and better physicians, Dr. Mark Holterman is exponentially extending his influence in improving the health of people across the world.
