Sean Penn may be best known for acting in dramatic films, especially those with a political slant, but he’s walked away from his Hollywood fame to pursue a new dream. Penn wants to spend his time writing and he already has a new novel out. His first book, “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff,” is already available and now, as he promotes the endeavor, Penn talks about transitioning from actor to writer.

Sean says writing his own book was nothing like his experiences on the sets of his films. One significant difference was in completing the project. When working on a film, Penn says it’s a collaborative effort with everyone contributing something to the project. When it’s done and the public responds, no single person gets all of the credit for the successes or all of the blame for the failings.

In writing a book, Sean says it’s a solitary endeavor. For better or for worse, it’s all his and he says that’s something he finds alluring. In talking about writing “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff,” Mr. Penn said he liked being able to follow his own creativity without having to apologize to anyone.

While Sean might have written his story as a screenplay, he says he wanted to get away from the movie business altogether. He was feeling too pressured by the rigors of filmmaking and wanted to get away from that to do something of his own. Penn adds that he was feeling burned out from dealing with the Hollywood atmosphere and wanted to get away from that.

“For me, I just got to a point in my career where I was just worn down with people’s personalities and the burden of expectation that all the money on top of a movie breeds going into it,” said Mr. Penn with regards to the new book with the unusual title, Bob Honey who just do stuff.

Additionally, the “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff” author says he liked not having to answer to financial backers or creative collaborators. Instead, he wrote his book on his own terms. Once it was finished, it was sent off to the publisher and they either liked it or they didn’t. Sean Penn likes the finality of that. It seems writing is in his blood.
