What BPM do you use to beat the heat?

Personally I love 105 BPM.  I don’t know if that has any impact on the heat though.

Gonna hit on the “Game Changer” here for a sec.  In short “Meh”.

Ean Gold is someone to watch, and this is a great idea. When I put this item in perspective with my controllers (analog/digital/etc) this is no more than a novelty.

Game Changer

Again the Dicer certainly is cool, it fits a need, and I offer my props on that level.  The real question I ask is simple:

“Is the DJ crowd deprived of gadgets?”

Seriously, this is no more than a tightly packaged PIC micro-controller that is well thought out.  The polish that Novation added is the only real leap (packaging and marketing).  The “Game Changer” label certainly gets under my skin and contributes to (this editors) diminishing view of Novation.

Perspective : I first knew Novation in the late 1990’s when my friend Greg was repping and I managed an all synth/keyboard boutique.  But we are the jolliest buncha’ mean folks you may meet when we get on the “who sucks” discussion.

In short, the only gear I am not pissed off at is Nord and anything I have not owned.  (But there was a huge issues w/Nord about a year ago – but that was all US distribution channels).

Back to the Dicer, and in the scope of Ableton there is no “standard interface” like the turn table.  The APC is the only kinda’ almost, the Trigger Finger is also a good contestant.  So the universal “game changer” is probably not going to happen for the modern digital musician.

But this is not a sad note – “The Bridge” is coming. We are all hoping that this is a stable non-crashy release with some fun stuff.  This is going to close the gap on DJ-Ableton artists.  This is awesome!

On the note of “Ableton Artist” – is it DJ? I don’t like getting grouped with that crowd (I have never DJ’ed, so don’t box me in!). Electronic artist is not quite there, electronic musician is totally good but too long. What the hell are we?  There is a bunch of software nipping at the heels of Ableton and you certainly do not what to reference your trade by the name of the product (sorry Ableton). So what do we call our self?

The Ableton spectrum is HUGE – from folk to techno to dub-whatever to a bunch of categories I could not describe.

Electro-crunk-wobble-swing-remixed jazz changes? HUH?

So the point is clear – make your own game changer. I am working on my own game changer as I hook up with a crew who has a CNC machine (oh HELL yeah).  So if you ever wonder why I don’t do too many shows or gig like mad, I am usually soldering, programming, and plotting!

Other News

Fader Fox gets a rejuvenation. Check out this article form CDM, here’s a sexy image. The big change – USB!

The Fader is a FOX!

File Under: I was wrong!

I was predicting apocalypse with “DJ Hero“. Well, we are still here! But now there is a new threat to society and our lives. It comes from the same concept.  As Mark Mosher reports – there is a real MIDI keyboard included in  the new Rock Band.

Is the the end?

Is doom near?

Mark has some great commentary as well, worth the stop.

Probably not. Here’s a video:

Follow up coolness – Mark is a synth guy (is it our age?). So much of his work touches me in that special place, you know, in the oscillator. Here’s something fresh on Modular Synthesis.

OMFG REMIX! Here’s a link for some Bass Nector Natives. Get them NOW! These don’t stay up long. Save time and go right for the stems HERE.

I gotta tell you – go out have fun! There is nothing really happening on my radar screen.  The iPad hype has faded, iPhone 4g is not really a gamer changer (LOL), and no new software releases are on the horizon.

Or is there…???

Ask and ye shall recieve (MIDI on the iPad) and more news!

Coming later this month from Line 6 is a connection from the base of the touch/iPhone/iPad that handles MIDI. Here is the original link I found.

I took the image:

When you’re done geeking over that stuff, go over here and check out this post on Livid. Livid is just plain cool. I quote:

The digital audio market is flooded with cheap MIDI crap built in China at a fraction of the cost we end up paying for it as consumers. Trust me, I’ve bought plenty of it. It’s not all bleak though! There is one company creating products that aren’t made overseas from cheap plastic, with limp faders, chunky knobs, and sticky buttons.

Great stuff! More on Livid…

I have been emailing them regarding the builder series. They will offer OEM pricing or discounts. So those of you with a good controller idea looking for the PCB back-end let Livid help you get the product to market faster. Contact me (Marc) directly for details and contact at Livid.

Again – thanks to everyone who came to Cache Flowe’s presentation on Processing.org – PLEASE drop me an email if you are interested in a class. We are working on it!

Communikey is coming – via Westword.

Here is a link to some Ableton Master Class presentations (of various types). I am hoping to see this crew in Denver working with us soon!

These guys are making a wireless foot controller. I know some of you out there want this! Here’s the sad truth – I found this by clicking on an ad from Gmail.

David Henderson sends these links:

Apc40 Monome Emulation and some Monome History.

Skinput – yes, sounds gross, but this is awesome!

And some video form our evening!

More soon. –Marc

Rapid Fire Monday Ableton Colorado

To use the parlance of our current time:

OMG OMG OMG Cache Flowe haz teh ROXXOR!

Yeah, what is the world coming to huh?

In other words – Cache Flowe dropping some mad skills for an A/V set! Do come!

Got your history in order? How about this article outlining the past 120 years of electronic music.

Linux side note – Launchpad getting ported to, you guessed it – LINUX! Here is the article. Relevancy? We got it. Her you go:

  • One day Ableton will run on Linux! (probably not)
  • The algorithms are getting more widespread and the “uniqueness” of Ableton is diminishing. This means open source software will start getting projects dialing in these ideas
  • Ableton is not the ONLY program.
  • Linux is Cool

I could go on, but I would be geeking out too hard.

FREE STUFF – some live packs on Groove Packs site – click here for a zip file. Get it while the link works!

Mid/Side processing – check out this new unit via Gear Junkies.

How about a  good debate on 16 vs 24 bit? Thx to Joe for keeping the thread hot.

The Boulder Laptop Orchestra is performing up in Boulder 13March2010. I am getting more details on this…

More soon!

Do not fear the button!

The controllerism show is on the horizon! RSVP Now! FaceBook

I missed some emails this weekend as POP email crashed for my provider (I aggregate).  So if there was something crazy interesting/important/similar – resend! I will be going backwards through emails.

On other news – we are having fun!  I will be releasing a review** of the NIIO Analog Iotine Core in the next week.  We teamed up with Chase to get some instructional videos on the unit.  We are currently editing.

We got some good tape from Darwin on Max, I am open to ideas on how to get them online. YouTube limits are 10 minutes. The 10+ minute videos are a special feature I just don’t see how to get!  Vimeo?  Hosting on my server will probably get me some heat (because the bots will trigger mass bandwidth, plus there is not sharing/embed).

I have been spending time with Final Cut and Celemony DNA. Nothing too impressive to talk about in Final Cut, just another software package. But DNA is SICK!

Don’t forget Cache Flowe in March!

As for the summer – thoughts (feed back very welcome!). Our summers in Denver/Colorado/Boulder are some of the best anywhere in the world.  I am looking to scale back the meet-ups after April (through the summer) so we can enjoy our evenings. Hell, even I want to ride around town with my wife on our cruisers.  Instead of larger formal meet-ups I would like to invest in smaller gatherings all over and include our community in festivals (supporting) and do various levels of out-reach before shows and to similar groups.8

**On the topic of review – the term “review”  is not totally correct. As there are a few companies looking to work with Ableton Colorado already, another round of “cleaning the air” is called for…

Our goal is to extend the use, functionality, and overall exposure of gear that is not on the radar (cough***Guitar Center***).   There is a certain “departure” from journalistic integrity (if that is still a thing anymore). Our goal is to build community and knowledge in an academic manner with users (producers) and producers (of gear in this instance).  The policy is simple:

If it is crap, send it back

Don, in the context of this “review” has  a “filter” that is so freaking cool we need to help get the word out (I am using some bass sounds I generated in my standard set).  So great.

Helpers wanted!
That is it, more soon.

Mid January 2010 Ableton Denver rambling…

Catching up here – not much has been going on as we prepare fro NAMM. So the next post will be littered with coolness trickling back from the great gig in (the) Anaheim,

Starting out – Solid State Logic has released a digitally controlled analog router.  I found this via Gear Wire.

This looks cool, an audio slicer preset (via synthtopia) from Tron Audio.

I am a confessed delay junkie, so I may have to get a hold of this classic delay VST collection from V-Plugs (via Gear Wire).

Cool Product or end of days? You decide (iPhone container with keys from Akai) – see it on Matrix Synth.

Right after I buy my MPD 24 they make a cooler MPD26 in BLACK!  Blast! Look over here at Matrix Synth.

Holy crap – someone shrunk my APC – the APC20! (Matrix Synth).

This looks like fun! http://snazzyfx.com/

Yes, Serrato + Ableton is coming – I told you so (in the summer).  Synthopia gets the credit.

That is all for now.  I will micro-post as cool stuff trickles in from NAMM.

Week of 19October2009 “Bring the Cold” Edition

Week of 19October2009 “Bring the Cold” Edition : The weather is chilling up out there and that means my tube amps and power supplies will turn into heaters instead of the summer sweat lodge.

Events:

Next Meet Up is 22November2009 at the Walnut Room. Watch for the official Post! Put it on your calender right now!

Friday 23Oct2009 at the D-Note [[[http://dnote.us]]] Darren Kramer is live with Live (Ableton). Darren’s site.  Here is a snippet:

“ELECTRIC QUARTET” Latest Release! FEATURING “Electric” Horns and B3 Organ. PERFORMING Original Funk, Jazz & Soul A brand new 4-piece DKO group that primarily features improvisation and the use of high-tech electronics and loops to create innovative sounds and unique textures.

Beta 23Oct2009 : Mochipet @ Beta BPL w Spectre & Ale Fillman – info at Facebook

Via Gear Junkies : At this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), 365LIVE and Media Satellite present a series of workshops and audiovisual jam sessions, including an introduction to Ableton Max for Live, a fully integrated tool kit for making your own instruments, effects and extensions in Ableton Live 8. More info is available here.

If you are not aware of http://www.remixcomps.com you should be. If you are an infected mushroom fan there is a remix comp going on right now.

2010 Bent festival calling for performers – goto Matrixsynth for information.

Matrix Synth has this link on how to build a synth. I looked over some of this and found it slow moving but interesting. The content is hard to move along without either  getting boring or wooshing by too quick. Why do I mention this? Because there are so many people pushing synthesis with no idea of the roots or principles of synthesis (Did you know that a Hammond organ tone wheel is a mechanical synthesizer or additive synthesis)

What is a vocoder? Here is the answer, vocoded of course.

Visually

Hey! Ableton Tweets has a new (?) site up at http://abletontweets.com!!! and reminds us the Ableton is 10 years old!

There is a video titled “Mickey Mouse Abuse” I placed here.  Well, here is an interview of Kamoni (the artist) on Phuq Radio

Max For Live Paths, Objects, and Observers from max4live on Vimeo.

Editors note on Max for Live: There is going to be a lot of fun out of the box stuff available, but I want to say that we are entering a world of programming with this application. Please send me notes on this topic. I am seeing traditional programming ideas in Max more so than any other software packages. I work in this field and I would love to talk more on the topic where it gets deep.

Official (?) sneak peak of Max:

Circuit Bending for beginners via Matrix Synth.

Hardware :

Flame, uhh. Get ready. Well, first off, these are the cats who make the “Talking Synth” (it uses a vocal processing chip instead of a traditional oscillator – way cool). Well, they have some amazing MIDI gear also. Start here the site is harder to navigate than it should be, but there are some real gems.

Live Block control surface (demo) by Livid. Really good stuff! Info via Syntopia.

Livid Block Control Surface Intro from Livid Instruments on Vimeo.

Is this hardware, hard wear, software, or soft wear? Regardless – This is cool, jump into your own (damn) control surface. . ***Not recommended for anyone with bladder issues***

Music "soft wear" - more here.

Music "soft wear" - more here.

New midi controller series from M-Audio.  From what I see, this is more like an update of the Oxygen series. I am not too clear on the changes – my use of M-Audio products is almost none. I welcome input or reviews! Send me a message.

Elextro Harmonix has released the Memory BoyAnalog Delay – 550ms of delay time with Chorus and Vibrato” . Fun stuff. These guys have a warm place in my heart.

Tascam, the steady hitters in the audio interface game have dropped another solid unit – the US-2000
the quote:

TASCAM has announced the US-2000, a new one rackspace 16-input audio interface that’s expected to sell for under $500.

Super major FYI here – Touchprone make a bunch of fringe MIDI and similar items. The ebay store – one handy unit is the In line sync start-stop – here is an auction link . This is somethin every MIDI person should know about. There are several companies out there producing, this is but one option for inline start-stops.

Software

Free Alterex VST’s (via Matrix Synth)

Free SPL attacker plugin (via gear Junkies) “SPL celebrates one year of Analog Code and give away one Attacker per computer.” Direct link.

Free Jazz Guitar pack for Knotakt via Synthopia. Pettinhouse has released WarmJazzFREE, a jazz guitar sample library for Kontakt.

Another case of “show your age” – Remember the Korg M1? In our part of town this keyboard was the total “cat’s meow” for live Latino music in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Well, here is a link for a free sample pack via Synthipoa.

Circuit Bent Sounds library via Synthopia here is the quote:

Loopmasters has introduced Circuit Bent Sounds 2, a collection of bastardized electronics, twisted circuits, rewired technology and warped audio.

Pretty cheap and tons of sounds. Check out this page also.

I do not think I posted this – “The Future of Ableton Live” – interesting twist that came via Synthopia:

The future of Ableton - inside the box!

The future of Ableton - inside the box!

Online Synthesizer – good job!!!

Personally

Well – I finished my Ableton Rig. This has been going on since February. My goals:

  • Fit into a “DJ Coffin” amount of space
  • Push Ableton harder than most – but do much of it in the analog / non-digital / out of Ableton world.
  • 10 minute set up
  • Minimal wires (about 15 connections split evenly between power / USB – Firewire -MIDI / audio)
  • Ability to pick up the entire set up and move it on/off stage easily (this gets to be pretty important when playing live)

I have a ton of photos, I will be posting more information soon. This is one of my specialties – I mod gear, cases, controllers, etc and get TIGHT rigs together. My gigging key rig was always a total blast! My Ableton rig is even more killer. Here is a link to a Tumblog I keep regarding audio peripherals and technology. Watch for more links.

Finally – a minor blow to Denver.  I am from NY also and aree with Oliver.  However, there are a bunch of us whoare pushing the envelope.

September 22, 2009

Around town Denver / Boulder / Ableton 21 September 2009

Let’s start with the reminder – Meet up #1 is coming up this Sunday! 6:30 – The Walnut Room.

Ableton-Land:

Looking for a job, relocation, and a new language? How about working for Ableton?

Public Profile is coming soon on the Ableton site. Just noticed that element at https://www.ableton.com/account.

This comes from Native Instruments but has a lot of generic “how to” tips for Vista (same tips different version) – If you use Vista / Windows you should go through this.

Akai is sponsoring Tresor Award contest (with Numark – the sister company with Alesis and others…). Editor note : I smoked the crossfader in a Numark mixer in 10 days. The contest seems to be “kid” orientated. The contest states “Open to 18-22 year old…”.

File under cool or fun?

Side Note:

I am sure everyone heard that Propeller Head’s Record is live (out of beta / need to pay for it now). Here is a post I bumped into on Synthtopia. For the record Record is “an electronic system designed to record, edit and play back digital audio”. Okay, movin’ on…

Synths and Gear: I am a synth head, more physical and less virtual.  As much as this site is Ableton, synths really do make the world go ’round.

Free VST Synth here! Windows only, sorry folks.

Mellotron IS BACK! via Gear Junkies

File under “how did this escape my radar?” http://www.vintageking.com/

Add to the I want list: http://www.schippmann-music.com/ebbeundflut.html

Via Wire To The Ear Love thy Doepfer!

Doepfer Sneak Peek from niamhguckian on Vimeo.

Wavedrum or Otto? Here is some more information on the re-creation of the wavedrum from Korg. Answer : Both?

Portable Analog Groove Box – I think I like this!

New idea on control surface for reason (these ideas are important to watch evolve):

Hey elder statesmen, remember the SH 101? Here is a SH-ish virtual via Synthtopia

So freakin’ sexy: The article.

Sexy

Tech:

Either this will blow your freaking mind or you already know! The idea is simple – use images to synthesize sounds / music.  I first ran into this through a friend of a friend here. (should we call him into Denver to demo some sick shit?) It was this Synthopia article that pointed me to http://photosounder.com/ and the flashback ensued.

Mix Cloud – the YouTube of Radio – did you know? Mark from Modulate This did! (They need to work on UI imho – took 5 clicks for a dumb user to get any results (youtube = 1 click) and buffering is not programmed correctly – no play while loading without click -GREAT START how ever!)

Mashine gets some vital updates.

The 64 bit stuff is coming in for the Mac world such as the  Gear Junkies report. Now remember, Windows was WAY ahead on the 64 bit curve.  The problem was simple – few companies would write for XP 64 (with good reason) or for Vista 64 (with good reason).  Keep your fingers crossed that Microsoft is not going to FAIL on version 7.  I am seriously considering a move to Mc for all my mastering in studio  (tracking os moving to Linux).

Faderpro.com is getting into re-mixing instruction.

And DNA has been ALL OVER the net this week, worth the mention because it really is amazing! DNA is Direct Note Access – allowing you to edit single notes in polyphonic recordings – sound like a dream, not any more. Info

Gearjunkies reports that the Voxengo Polysquasher version 2.1 update is now available for download here.

The end is near? DJ Hero? I have never played any of the *hero games (not my thing) – In fact, I jumped on Call of Duty on Friday to “Kill some Nazi’s” and only lasted 5 minutes before I decided to practice Ableton. So, here is a brightly colored Daft Punk DJ Hero spot!

If you are in Seattle Sept 24+ go see The Decible Festival.

Week of Labor Day 2009 – around town and beyond

Week of Labor Day 2009

Update: Meet Up – I am trying very hard (too hard IMHO) to get my date solid.  Emails and phone calls are not being returned by my venue of choice.  I am open to suggestions and moving ahead with to talk to a new club opening up in central Denver where I also have friends.  The last Thursday of Sept is my date.  I am sure many many people out there have dealt with clubs and club owners – it is like the exact inverse of a used car sales person (or put into mathematical terms : 1/(used car sales person))

Enough math.

# Some shows:

  • Vendetta Festival Sept 25-7 for the Gothic/Industrial inclined.  The link. Some locally orientated acts such as Blackcell and Torso will be performing as well as nationals.  Check out the line up, this is a 3 day festival at 3 different clubs.  If I can make it I would love to see The Horrist at the Bar Standard. The Horrist (aka Oliver Chesler runs the Wire to the Ear blog)
  • BASSLAB 003 is this Friday (11sept) at Beta – local and otherwise will be thumpin’ – ( Future Simple Project, Fresh 2 Death, S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Project aspect, movax on visuals ++). For details here is the Facebook page.
  • The show of shows is happening, again in NYC the AES Conference. For music geeks this is the holy grail (yeah NAMM is cool but this is much smarter while NAMM is flashy). So if you are in NY October 9-12 2009 go check it out. In fact – Sweetwater is (was) giving away free admission.

# ABLETON

  • New Max for Live Screen Cast – the long awaited is closer http://www.extendlive.com/?p=110 (site was crashing for me)
  • Extendlive.com also has a free Operator download available at http://www.extendlive.com/?p=96 (site still crashing)  “free give-away from the Presentation I held at the Ableton Live User Group in Berlin”

# Free Stuff

  • Line 6 if giving away the farm, the POD Farm that is.  Go here and download a ton of plugins. Offer ends September 30, 2009.
  • Reason 4 is on the way and if you want $129 worth of free piano sounds go here (gotta get Reason 4 however).

# Content

  • Gear Junkies [article link] pointed out this cache of techno samples / loops from Click Produce – there are several different packs available to suite your style.
  • Need to get your Ableton Synthesis up to par (or synthesis in general)? Go here – tons of great videos.  We have a lot of instructors in the Ableton group if you want some hands on time or geek talk.  I am one of many synthesis people, drop a note.

# Gear Watch

  • Akai MPD18’s are hitting the street at $99.  This is USB and MIDI (yeah) pad controller.  What a great way to add a few more (velocity sensitive) pads. Check it out at Akai.  The info out there is a little vague on the MIDI (5 pin) – but it appears to be real.  I have been watching this item for a few months and I have almost 100% confirmation on the MIDI as well as MIDI over USB.
  • Also – Allen and Heath are shipping the Xone:22 – a 2(x2) Battle mixer at $299 street.  Here is a Future Music link because the Xone site is not as good a resource (link). Here is what I like : 2 channel battle style mixer that allows you to flip phono inputs into line inputs making this a 2×2(x1), there are XLR outs (OMFG!), a real FX loop (OMFG again), and it looks like the unit will be InnoFader ready. (I have a support ticket into A&H on that item). The last ship date was 16Sept, that has been pushed back to middle October according to a phone call this morning.*

# Of note

  • In keeping with current technology as it happens, BPM magazine reviewed the APC40 http://www.bpmmagazine.net/2009/08/akai-apc40-ableton-live-controller/ – I am a little grumpy right now so I will refrain from discussing the article. At least  I know what is “happening”.
  • Joe at Home Studio Corner pointed out Drop Box here here.  Dropbox is a file sharing site located at http://getdropbox.com where you start off with 2gb of room to share / trade your files (sound familiar?).
  • How Good Monitor Mixing Enhances a Performance article link : http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/mixing-mastering/how-good-monitor-mixing-enhances-a-performance/. Pretty basic stuff but a good reference point of monitor mixing and live band considerations for the hybrid performers.
  • Hey everybody – did you know that The Walnut Room is coming to south Broadway?  That’s right – the old Freaky’s on Ellsworth and Broadway (1 block south of 1st Ave) finally went up in smoke (literally) and The Walnut room is moving in – eta is Fall 2009. This has been going on for a while, but last week I went over and peeked the windows.  Looking really nice! Map Link
  • And finally – the LAREST CONTROL SURFACE EVER! CDM got this to my digital doorstep : http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/09/02/gps-beatmap-ford-ltd-salt-flats-locative-driving-control-surface/. In summary – beats and sounds are overlapping and mapped via GPS.  So you drive around the and mix is created.  If you don’t get it – watch the video.  This is a revolutionary idea for music and mixing.  A living, breathing radio remix.  This could prove to be very fun and interesting when you tie in your iPhone / similar device and have massive participation.  Imagine directing a Flash Mob using this technology?

As always, if you know or see something let me know.  Local Ableton, electronic music, and shows welcome!

Post script – did you upgrade to Snow Leopard yet?

* I am NOT a DJ, but I do use DJ Mixers in my rig (some are circuit bent).  The DJ Mixer can add amazing real time control to Ableton – when you hot rod a little harder you can explore entirely new ideas.
